The Story Behind Pic-Wizard®

After spending more than 25 years in the field of education, Linda Queiruga developed Pic-Wizard® to entice and motivate a very difficult population of students. Linda is a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Deaf Education. She has a Masters of Education in Special Education and a Reading Endorsement for K-12.

"By the time my students reached 9th grade, they had experienced 8 years of failure. They had low self-esteem, were resigned to the fact that they would never be successful in school or life and were ready to drop out as soon as they reached the legal age of 16. These students were very difficult to motivate.

When I created the Pic-Wizard® cards for use in my classroom, I was amazed by the students willingness to try them. The more I created, the more in demand the cards became. Soon the students were competing against themselves and others to see who could master the most words.

When they were ready to demonstrate their mastery, they would sit across from me and I would flash each card for them. They had to pronounce the word correctly and then give me the correct answer. I expected 100% mastery before they could get credit for the cards.

They loved the cards. It wasn't long before I had to require they complete their other assigned work in order to pass the class prior to using the Pic-Wizard® cards. Finally, I was doing what I felt I had been hired to do -- meet the needs of all the students in my classroom and engage them in learning."
