The Story Behind Pic-Wizard

A graduate of the University of AZ, with a dual Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education and Deaf Education and a Masters of Education in Special Education, Pic-Wizard creator Linda Queiruga has spent more than 40 years in the field of education.

Linda developed Pic-Wizard out of her own need to help students who were unmotivated, unwilling to participate and unwilling to believe they could learn.

“By the time my students reached 9th grade they had experienced 8 years of failure.  They had low self-esteem, were resigned to the fact that they would never be successful in school or life and were ready to drop out as soon as they reached the legal age of 16.  These students were very difficult to motivate.

When I created Pic-Wizard for use in my classroom, I was amazed by the students’ willingness to try them.  The more I created, the more in demand the cards became.  Soon the students were competing against themselves and others to see who could master the most words. 

When they were ready to demonstrate their mastery, they would sit across from me and I would flash each card for them.  They had to pronounce the word correctly and then give me the correct answer.  I expected 100% mastery before they could get credit for the cards.

They loved the cards.  It wasn’t long before I had to require they complete their other assigned work in order to pass the class prior to using the Pic-Wizard cards.  Finally, I was doing what I felt I had been hired to do – meet the needs of all the students in my classroom and engage them in learning.”

Pic-Wizard for Special Needs

ESL/Bilingual and special needs students often have similar needs in the classroom; however, it is imperative to their comfort that they not feel alienated from their peers.  As Pic-Wizard is comprised of color coded cards that can be adjusted to any level of ability, ESL/Bilingual students or students with special needs will always feel as though they are part of the larger group.

Since Pic-Wizard cards can be adjusted to individual needs, students experience success immediately because their grouping of cards are matched to their level of ability.
